Compare & Contrast

Prewrite:  Brainstorm

The Goal:  

In this assignment, you will use your own thoughts and experiences to brainstorm the following EQ: 

How would you compare & contrast _______ and you?

Your Purpose:

Your purpose is to describe in detail the things that make you and someone you've chosen alike and different. 

Your Audience: 

Your audience is your classmates who have never met this person.  They want to know as much as possible about that person to see if, maybe, this person might be someone to get to know.

Your Graphic Organizer:  

You will use a Venn Diagram to brainstorm your ideas.  There is a Google Draw doc for you on the right.  Please make a copy of this doc.

Be sure to watch the videos below BEFORE you start to create you Venn diagram.  Can you make your Venn by hand?  Certainly! Just be ready to take a snapshot of it to upload to your instructor.  

Directions:

1.  First, discuss this idea with a parent: 

 

When you and ___ meet?  What was it that drew you to him/her?  As you have grown in your relationship?  How have your similarities and differences made your relationship better?  

2.  As you discuss, answer these CQs to add detail to your graphic organizer: 

 

How do the two of you compare and contrast in appearance? Family?  Personality?

Who introduced the two of you to each other?

What was it that drew you together?  What personal similarities and differences hold you together as friends?

When there were times of conflict between you, how did your similarities and differences help resolve the conflict?

Where does _______:  go to school or work?   go for fun?   How do these compare and contrast to where you go?

How do your similarities and differences create interesting or funny situations between the two of you?  

Why is this person worth getting to know?  What makes this person different from any other friend you have?

3. ​  Use each one of the CQs above as the basis for your compare/contrast graphic organizer (That's your Venn Diagram.)   You can put these questions in any order, but given the purpose and  audience you've been assigned, consider using the "Why" CQ as a way to bring your writing to a close.
