Intro to Classification
Introduction:
You've done so well with compare/contrast writing, that it's time to show you a more complex paragraph format that allows you to compare, contrast, define, and categorize ideas. It's called classification.
What's the difference?
At first blush, classification writing sounds a lot like compare & contrast. In some ways it is. But classification writing can give the writer more flexibility in showing relationships because you can
-
Define categories or qualities that help explain relationships,
-
Show how items meet the qualities you've listed,
-
Explain points of misunderstanding by showing how items "fit" or "don't fit" the definition, and
-
Pick and choose as many examples as you need to explain. You are not limited to "just" the items from a Venn diagram.
