Sentence Parts: Sentence Mistakes

The Goal:

In this lesson, you will learn two types of common mistakes writers make when constructing sentences:  the sentence fragment and the run-on sentence.  Knowing these mistakes and how to fix them is essential for completing your writing scaffold.

You will practice identifying sentence mistakes.  Be sure to watch, read, and play any games to help you remember the information.

  1. Watch the video.  Be sure to spend time reviewing the narrator's comments.  There are screenshots of this video in the printables.

Note:  The second video also talks about a third type of sentence mistake: comma splices.  Feel free to learn about this sentence mistake, but we will address comma splices later on in this course.

2.  Understanding how to find and fix sentence mistakes might seem hard right now.  Don't worry! It will take time, but you will get it.  We will be using Quill.org to practice fixing sentences throughout the year.    You will also be fixing sentences when you edit your writing.

3.  Use these images to help you identify and fix sentence fragments and run-on sentences.  Click on the images to learn more.

4. Use the videos, images, printables, and word list to help you answer the questions in the next assignment.
